How to select speakers based on wattage?

Some people rely on the wattage of speakers to make decisions. In this table, I've created a simplified guide on how to choose speakers based on wattage. However, before looking at this table, it's crucial to understand the three types of power: RMS (Root Mean Square), music power (or program power), and peak power.

RMS (Root Mean Square):

Represents the average or continuous power handling capability of a speaker or amplifier that the device can handle without being damaged or experiencing distortion. RMS is usually the most useful power parameter.

Music Power or Program Power:

Usually double the RMS Power. Represents the maximum power handling capability of a speaker or amplifier for continuous or extended periods without being damaged or experiencing distortion.

Peak Power:

Denotes the absolute maximum power handling capability of a speaker or amplifier for very short durations, typically measured in milliseconds.

Note that additional factors, such as the occasion, should also be considered. For instance, dance parties typically require speakers with higher power output, while background music doesn't necessitate as much wattage.
